For the past twenty years the Walnut Cove Public Library has
been a valued resource for a group of patrons that has grown from
several hundred in 1979 to over 4,000 today. The number of items
in the Library has grown from less than 1,000 to more than 22,000.
The Library has become one of the most important institutions
serving the people of Walnut Cove and the surrounding communities.
When the current Library building was constructed in 1978, it
was built to last twenty years, and today, after 25 years of continuous
use, the Library's programs, activities, collections, and volume
of circulation have long since outgrown the current space and
facility.
Today the Library building, having served long and well, urgently
needs complete renovation; program areas and facilities need to
be expanded and improved; more adequate meeting rooms for community
groups need to be provided; and computers for networking and Internet
use need dedicated space and state of the art technology.
The estimated cost of the propsed improvements to the Library
is $700,000. A former resident of Walnut Cove has given the Library
a $100,000 challenge grant. The Town of Walnut Cove has meet that
challenge and Stokes County has exceeded that amount by an extra
$100,000.
The Library has begun a brick campaign. The bricks will be
inscribed with your special message and will be used in paving
the courtyard. If you would like purchase a brick or receive more
information, please call the Library or drop by to pick up a brochure.
Donations are continuing to be made to the Library and are tax-deductible.
