NC LIVE

NC LIVE provides North Carolina residents and students with
access to high quality information - searchable collections of
magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, electronic books,
historical materials, maps, and much more - covering a wide
range of topics. Individual databases are listed below.

North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE) offers
the citizens of North Carolina online access to complete
articles from over 9,000 newspapers, journals, magazines,
and encyclopedias, indexing for over 20,000 periodical titles,
and access to over 22,000 electronic books.

NC LIVE is available free of charge to library patrons, students,
and educators from four communities of interest (COIs) --
public libraries, community colleges, the state's university system,
and members of the North Carolina Association of Independent
Colleges and Universities.

NC LIVE is generously supported by the General Assembly and the citizens of North Carolina. Generous support for some of the independent college and university libraries has been received from The Duke Endowment and The Cannon Foundation.

Funding for NC LIVE depends on the General Assembly. Contact your local representatives to encourage continued support. To locate the representatives in your area, visit the General Assembly's web page.

When complete, North American Women's Letters and Diaries will be the largest collection of women's diaries and correspondence ever assembled. The collection is scheduled
to include approximately 150,000 pages of published letters
and diaries from individuals writing from Colonial times to
1950, plus 7,000 pages of previously unpublished materials.

The site includes the complete Encyclopædia Britannica, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, videos, and links to editor-selected Internet sites.

Created and hosted by CQ Press, the CQ Electronic Library (CQEL) is the definitive reference resource for research in American government, politics, history, public policy, and current affairs. A wealth of CQ Press resources and years of journalistic and editorial expertise are combined in CQEL (pronounced SEE´quell). It also offers researchers—whether students, scholars, professionals, or interested citizens—a range of tools for discovering, understanding, and making use of its authoritative content.

NoveList allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a template to locate other authors and titles of interest. In addition, three powerful search techniques allow readers to
look for books by entering descriptive terms that appear in subject headings, reviews, and other fields in the title records. NoveList contains materials for all ages including picture
books, children's "chapter" books, young adult titles and
books for adult readers.

  • Academic Search Premier--This multi-disciplinary database offers full text for nearly 1,850 scholarly journals, including nearly 1,300 peer-reviewed titles. Covering virtually every area of academic study, Academic Search Elite offers full text information dating as far back as 1985.
  • Business Source Premier
    This is the industry's most used business research database, providing the full text for more than 8,800 serials. Business Source Premier provides full text back to 1965 and searchable cited references back as far as 1998. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database is updated on a daily basis via EBSCOhost.
  • Newspaper Source--Newspaper Source provides selected full text for over 180 regional U.S. newspapers, international newspapers, newswires, newspaper columns and other sources as well as indexing and abstracts for national newspapers.
  • Primary Search--Primary Search provides full text for more than 60 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.
  • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
    This database provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.
  • EBSCO Animals--Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.
  • The Serials Directory--The Serials Directory provides access to the most up-to-date and accurate bibliographic information as well as current pricing structures for popular serials. This database contains over 182,000 U.S. and international titles, including newspapers, historical data for an additional 20,000 titles and data from over 85,000 publishers worldwide.
  • ERIC--the Educational Resource Information Center contains more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 980 educational and education-related journals.
  • CINAHL--the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, is the authoritative resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers. This database provides indexing and abstracting for over 1,600 current nursing and allied health journals and publications dating back to 1982, totaling over 800,000 records.
  • MAS Ultra - School Edition--Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database provides full text for over 500 text pamphlets, 253 full text reference books, 88,000 biographies, 83,500 primary source documents, and an image collection of 107,000 photos, maps and flags.
  • Middle Search Plus--Middle Search Plus provides full text for more than 150 popular, magazines for middle and jr. high school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.
  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition--This database provides nearly 600 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals.
  • Health Source - Consumer Edition--With Health Source - Consumer Edition you can search for information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source -Consumer Edition features searchable full text for over 190 journals including Consumer Reports on Health and Men's Health, as well as abstracts and indexing for over 205 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.
  • MasterFILE Premier--multidisciplinary database provides full text for nearly 1,950 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes 316 full text reference books, 88,000 biographies, 83,500 primary source documents, and an image collection of 107,000 photos, maps and flags.
  • Military & Government Collection--Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government, this database offers a thorough collection of periodicals, academic journals, and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of those sites. The Military & Government Collection provides cover-to-cover full text for nearly 350 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for nearly 450 titles.
  • Regional Business News--This database provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.
  • Clinical Pharmacology--Clinical Pharmacology provides access up-to-date, concise and clinically-relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs.
  • Pre-CINAHL--A companion database to CINAHL, Pre-CINAHL is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject searching), which are available to researchers only for the time when these articles are being assigned additional indexing.
  • PsycINFO--PsycINFO, from the American Psychological Association (APA), contains more than 2 million citations and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations, all in psychology and related disciplines, dating as far back as the 1800s. 97 percent of the covered material is peer-reviewed. Journal coverage, which spans 1887 to present, includes international material selected from nearly 2,000 periodicals in more than 25 languages.
  • CINAHL with Full Text-- CINAHL with Full Text provides indexing for 2,737 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1982. CINAHL with Full Text also contains searchable cited references for more than 1,150 journals and provides full text for 329 journals, plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. PDF backfiles to 1982 are also included.

Africa: An Encyclopedia for Students--Based on the scholarship in the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Africa, aimed at college and graduate students, this work presents Africa, from Egypt to Cape Town and from prehistoric times to the present day, in a format accessible to high school students. This set spans many disciplines, covering animals, foods, holidays and festivals, tribal groups, ecology, music and art, trade and economy, geography, religion, folklore, and fossil and skeletal discoveries.
African American Almanac--The African American Almanac provides historical and current information on African American history, society, and culture in 28 topical chapters (e.g., African American Firsts, Politics, Family & Health). It also includes a chronology, a chapter of important primary documents, directories of organizations and businesses, a bibliography of recently-published works, annotated lists of crucial court cases, a filmography, hundreds of brief biographies, and more than 650 photographs, illustrations, maps, and statistical charts located within the most appropriate text.
Animal Sciences--This interdisciplinary resource explores the wide-ranging diversity that exists within the animal kingdom. Entries examine how animals develop, animal ecology and behavior, and the connection between animals and humans. Also includes biographies of key scientists who have contributed to the study of animal life, as well as career opportunities within the field.
Arts and Humanities Through the Eras--Profiling milestones and movements in the arts, literature, music, and religion from a specific period, each volume in this five-volume set helps students and researchers understand the various disciplines of the humanities in relation to each other, as well as to history and culture. An overview of the period and a chronology of major world events begin each volume. Nine chapters follow, covering the major branches of the humanities: architecture and design, dance, fashion, literature, music, philosophy, religion, theater, and visual arts. Chapters begin with a chronology of major events within the discipline followed by articles covering the movements, schools of thought, and masterworks that characterize the discipline during the era and biographical profiles of pioneers, masters, and other prominent figures in the field. Chapters end with significant bibliography of primary documents from the period.
College Blue Book--Guide to thousands of 2- and 4-year schools in the U.S. and Canada, their programs, degrees, and financial aid sources. Features detailed descriptions, degree programs offered, scholarships, and occupational education programs.
Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco: Learning About Addictive Behavior--Covers the range of topics related to addiction for researchers in grade six and above. Approximately 200 articles cover everything from binge drinking to the role of genetics in addictive behaviors. Also included are additional articles on media representation, drug use in schools, herbal supplements, and more.
Encyclopedia of Bioethics--This edition is a complete revision of the Dartmouth Medal-winning set first published in 1995. Covering a wealth of topics on the ethics of health professions, animal research, population control and the environment, the set helps researchers to consider the impact of new scientific knowledge and its potential to harm or benefit present and future generations.
Encyclopedia of Children and Childhood in History and Society--This encyclopedia presents the social and cultural history of childhood from antiquity to the present. Children and Childhood examines this history through articles on education, parenting, child labor, economics, images of childhood, children's literature, play, toys and games, health, physiology, law, the criminal justice system and social welfare. Comparative articles include information about childhood in cultures throughout the world.
Encyclopedia of Food and Culture--Presents 600 articles on food and its place in human culture and society, covering everything from agronomy to zucchini. Students, academics, and general researchers will find entries on everything from food preparation, distribution and storage to holidays and festivals, nutrition and health, and cultures and cuisines. Entries range from 250 to 10,000 words each and are supplemented by 400 photographs and illustrations, sidebars, recipes, menus, timelines, and a comprehensive index.
Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World--This encyclopedia looks at Islam's role in the modern world, doing so in context of the religion's history and development over the last 13 centuries. Contains thematic articles, biographies of key figures, definitions, illustrations, maps and more.
Encyclopedia of Modern Asia-- Nearly 700 contributors from around the world, including 25 Asian countries, provide 3,000 articles on Modern Asia from a global perspective. Historical articles emphasize people, places, events, and developments that have had a lasting influence on Asia. Articles also cover Asian relations with Western nations, the relations between nations within Asia, and also the flow of people, goods, and ideas within Asia and globally.
Encyclopedia of Religion--The second edition of this highly regarded encyclopedia, intended to reflect both changes in academia and in the world since 1987, includes almost all of the 2,750 original entries -- many heavily updated -- as well as approximately 600 entirely new articles. RLG's Catalog of Art Museum Images Online — is a growing online collection documenting works of art from around the world. Images, text and multimedia represent a broad range of works of art from the collections of prominent museums, highlighting the creative output of cultures around the world, from prehistoric to contemporary times, and covering the complete range of expressive forms.

Digital Sanborn Maps provides academic and public libraries digital access to several large-scale maps of many North Carolina towns and cities dating from 1867 to 1970.
