History
In 1945, Ernest Collins and Laura Ellington requested
funds from Stokes County to start a public library. They were
awarded $45.00, and the library became a reality. The first Stokes
County Public Library was located in an old bank vault and was
staffed by volunteers.
In 1946, Elizabeth Smith was hired as the first
permanent staff member. The following year the bookmobile service
began with the purchase of what had been an old bread truck.
Stokes County was a charter member of the Northwestern
Regional Library system when it was formed in 1959.
In 1960, the library moved into a new facility
shared with the Stokes County Social Services. The first library
board was appointed by the Stokes County Commissioners in 1984.
The initial decision of the board was to change the library's
name to the Danbury Public Library.
In September 1990, a new 6,000 square foot library
facility was completed. The present bookmobile service utilizes
a van purchased by Stokes County.
Library services continue to expand throughout
the 1990's with the addition of an automated circulation system,
public internet access, and a children's computer with educational
software.
