Alleghany County

Alleghany County is located in the mountain region of northwestern North Carolina and is surrounded by the state of Virginia and the counties of Surry, Wilkes, and Ashe.

It was formed in 1859 from Ashe County and named for the Allegewi Indian Tribe.
The county seat of Sparta was incorporated in 1879 and named for the ancient city in Greece.

Stokes County

Stokes County is located in the Piedmont region of north central North Carolina and is surrounded by the state of Virginia and the counties of Rockingham, Forsyth and Surry Counties.

It was formed in 1789 from Surry County and named for Captain John Stokes (1756-1790), Revolutionary officer. Danbury replaced Germanton in 1849 as the county seat when Forsyth County was formed. Danbury was renamed Crawford and then changed back to Danbury in 1852.

Stokes County Tidbits

  • The only county in the United States that has a mountain range, Sauratown Mountains, within its borders.
  • North Carolina's block in the Washington Monument was quarried near Danbury.
  • Tories Den, a cave located beneath Moores Knob in Hanging Rock State Park, was occupied by a band of Tories during the Revolutionary War.


Surry County

Surry County is located in the Piedmont and mountain regions of northwestern North Carolina and is surrounded by the state of Virginia and the counties of Alleghany, Forsyth, Stokes, Wilkes and Yadkin.

It was formed in 1771 from Rowan County and was named for the English County of Surrey. The county seat of Dobson was incorporated in 1891and was named for either William Dobson, local justice of the peace or William P. Dobson, member of the General Assembly in 1814.

Surry County Tidbits

  • Eng & Chang Bunker, the famous Siamese twins, settled in the county in the mid-19th century.
  • The birthplace of Andy Griffith, actor and singer, famous for his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show.
  • The Wright Brothers Monument in Kitty Hawk, NC is constructed of granite quarried in Mount Airy.


Yadkin County

Yadkin County is located in the Piedmont region of northwestern North Carolina and is surrounded by the counties of Surry, Forsyth, Davie, Iredell and Wilkes.

It was formed in 1850 from Surry County and named for the Yadkin River. the county seat of Yadkinville was founded in 1850 and chartered in 1857. It was named for the county.

Yadkin County Tidbits

  • The birthplace of Thomas L. Clingman, US Senator and Confederate General
  • The name Yadkin first appears in a letter from Abraham Wood dated 1674 and refers to an Indian village called "Yattken Town."
  • Richmond Pearson, Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court from 1858 to 1878.
